Blocked Drains Dee Why

Away from the town centre, Dee Why carries a cluster of reserves and older community sites that don't get much attention in the usual suburb write-up.

Stony Range Regional Botanic Garden, developed from 1957 on Pittwater Road, and James Meehan Reserve beside the lagoon both sit next to some of the suburb's original postwar streets.

Dee Why Public School, established in 1922 on Fisher Road, runs on drainage laid across nearly a century of additions and repairs.

Homes and sites near these older pockets were mostly fitted with galvanised water pipe and earthenware drainage, standard for their era but well past the design life either was built for.

Established garden trees around the reserves send roots into any joint that's opened up, while the galvanised supply lines narrow internally over the decades, a fault sitting on the water side of things rather than the waste side.

Salt-laden air off the coast corrodes exposed fittings and copper faster than it would inland. Again, that sits closer to general plumbing than drainage, but the two often turn up on the same call.
